Course Overview
We have an active and friendly College Law Society which invites speakers six to eight times each year, as well as training students for mooting; there is also an annual Christmas Lunch and Summer Party for Law students.
St Edmund’s maintains strong links with former students, including an annual Law Event for current and former Law students.
There is further information about the course on the University and Faculty webpages.
Entry Requirements
Applications from mature students taking A levels or Access courses are welcome. There are no specific subject entry requirements for students looking to study Law as a first degree. Entry requirements can be found here.
We would normally expect candidates hoping to read Law as a second degree to hold a first-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant academic subject, although those with a very strong upper-second class degree combined with a subsequent distinction level performance in a Masters’ degree may be considered. Work experience in a relevant area is welcomed, but not essential. You will be asked to submit a piece of written work as part of your application. Applicants to the affiliate course are strongly encouraged to apply by the 15th October deadline.
Please note that we expect candidates whose first language is not English to have evidence of a high level of English language ability equivalent to IELTS at 8.0 overall with at least 7.5 in each element (TOEFL 114 overall).
Admissions Assessment
All applicants for Law are required to take the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT). Full details on how to register for the LNAT can be found on the LNAT website.
Applicants for Law in the first admissions round must take the LNAT by no later than 15 October 2024. You can register for the LNAT from 1 August to 15 September 2024, and the LNAT can be taken from 1 September 2024.
Applicants applying for Law to St Edmund’s as part of the second application round must take the LNAT by no later than 1 March 2025.
Please note that your performance in the assessment at interview will not be considered in isolation, but will be taken into account alongside the other elements of your application.
All students who apply, or are allocated, to St Edmund’s will be interviewed by the college if selected. This will be in addition to any interviews conducted by the Overseas interview scheme.
The reason I chose St Edmund’s is because I wanted a college which had a large international student base and which was relatively small. It is for all of these reasons that I have found St Edmund’s to be the perfect environment to study law. What is so endearing about Eddies is that the majority of students who come here have studied before. Therefore, particularily in the area of law, a law degree is the icing on the cake and the pressure to have perfect marks subsides and you have the time to engage in so many other aspects of University life. St Edmund’s might not have the prestige that comes with the larger colleges but it does have a laid back atmosphere, a friendly student body and an ample choice of the co-curricular. It is precisely because the college is small that mature students are allowed a larger role to play in the deicisons affecting them. The Fellowship at Eddies do care about the students, not just about them getting firsts. I think these merits are what makes a place at Eddies covoted, in truth, Eddies is cambridge’s best kept secret.

St Edmund’s adopts a work-hard play-hard mentality. The terms are rigorous but there is a multitude of social activity. In addition to the traditional Boat Club and College bar, St. Edmund’s is very proud to have a highly active Law Society and newly-founded Mooting Society. The Law Society organizes several guest dinners each term, giving students an opportunity to meet with esteemed members of the legal profession. There are also alumni events arranged at the beginning and end of each academic year, as well an annual Christmas Lunch and Summer Party. These events are always memorable and have also fostered relationships leading to full-time employment post- graduation.
The College you choose at Cambridge will be one of the most important decisions of your academic career. If you feel comfortable in a cosmopolitan and challenging, yet fun and supportive environment, then St. Edmund’s might be for you. Best of luck!
